Aims and Scope

JLB is a peer-reviewed, academic journal published by the Society for Leukocyte Biology for its members and the community of immunobiologists. The journal publishes papers devoted to the exploration of the cellular and molecular biology of granulocytes, mononuclear phagocytes, lymphocytes, NK cells, and other cells involved in host physiology and defense/resistance against disease. Since all cells in the body can directly or indirectly contribute to the maintenance of the integrity of the organism and restoration of homeostasis through repair, JLB also considers articles involving epithelial, endothelial, fibroblastic, neural, and other somatic cell types participating in host defense. Studies covering pathophysiology, cell development, differentiation and trafficking; fundamental, translational and clinical immunology, inflammation, extracellular mediators and effector molecules; receptors, signal transduction and genes are considered relevant. Research articles and reviews that provide a novel understanding in any of these fields are given priority as well as technical advances related to leukocyte research methods.

The refereeing of papers is managed by a pyramidal system involving an Editor-in-Chief who operates with the help of two deputy editors, five associate editors, and a 49-member editorial board as well as selected ad hoc reviewers chosen for their expertise on the topics of submitted studies. Reviewers and editors rank submitted manuscripts for priority and those receiving the highest scores can be internally nominated by the board or reviewers for publication within the “Spotlight on Leading Edge Research” section of the journal. Submissions of outstanding quality and impact are further recognized within this section as “Pivotal Advance” articles. Articles highlighted in this special section are accompanied by invited editorials. JLB is published monthly in print and online. In addition, a digital issue (e-JLB) is sent by e-mail to all Society for Leukocyte Biology members. An online archive of articles is available back to 1984. All accepted articles and reviews are available online as “epubs ahead of print” approximately three weeks after acceptance and are accessible through PubMed shortly thereafter.
